The Horse Show Mom's Survival Guide Horse Book By Susan S. Daniels

The Horse Show Mom's Survival Guide Horse Book

By Susan S. Daniels
Publisher: The Lyons Press, 2005, ISBN: 1-59228-394-2
At some point in a mother's life, her child, most likely her daughter, will smile sweetly and say, "Mommy, I want to learn to ride a horse. And then I want to win lots of blue ribbons." What's a mother to do? Or for that matter, a father, since he'll become involved, too. Even people who rode when they were younger may not remember the ins and outs of equestrian competition, especially the way it's done these days. Riding to the rescue comes Susan S. Daniels, an experienced and accomplished Horse Show Mom. Taking the perplexed parent under her wing, she provides advice on locating a suitable lesson stable, including determining whether a particular instructor is right for your child (and what to do if not); deciding when-or whether-to buy a horse or a pony; outfitting horse and rider (must the animal's leg wraps and the child's ponytail ribbons match?); and understanding and coping with stable politics and diplomacy, such as when it's appropriate for barn managers and instructors to pay more attention to one youngster over another. When it comes to horse showing, Daniels explains how to tell when your child is ready for competition, what's expected of horse and rider at various levels of proficiency, which supplies moms should always have on hand (safety pins, hair nets, and tissues head the list), how to deal with your child's triumphs and tears, and how to understand complicated but crucial point systems for regional and national championships. With warm and encouraging humor, sound advice, and illustrative true-life adventures from the worlds of Western, hunter/jumper, combined training, and dressage competition, The Horse Show Mom's Survival Guide is an essential "leg up" for any parent whose youngster has that blue-ribbon gleam in her eye. Humorous illustrations by Harry Weber.

Horse Power Vintage Draft Horse Wagon Driving Book By Frank Lessiter

Horse Power Vintage Draft Horse Wagon Driving Book By Frank Lessiter

Horse Power Vintage Draft Horse Wagon Driving Horse Book

By Frank Lessiter
Publisher: Reiman Publications, Inc., 1977, ISBN: none given
This book was written in the style of a magazine, right down to the page layout. The chapters (or "articles" if you prefer) go to great depths sometimes, but the topics covered in the book are nonetheless well-rounded. As befits the cover image, most of the book discusses more agricultural aspects of draft horses - but it also has some novelties, such as the 40-horse hitch. This book is an insight into not only horses, but the genuine sincerity that their owners had for keeping and training them. A bit of the information has now been disproved - for example, the American Cream is NOT extinct (it's just a very specialty breed, although the idea of extinction was a very likely possibility at the time this book was printed). While today's farmer use big horsepower tractors and super-powerful machines, many still remember when the draft horse was king of the farm. Bringing the early days or real horsepower into the proper perspective is one of the main purposes of the book. The important role of draft horses in American agriculture is detailed. The accomplishments of the draft horse, the uncelebrated work horse of the American agriculture industry and other non-glamorous duties, are detailed here in this loving tribute to these beautiful beasts of burden. Tons of black & white photos! Yellowing & wear to cover, words "For Sale $8.00" written in pen(faded) at top of front cover & some pen scribblings on 1st few pages from a child.
