Smoky The Cowhorse Vintage Mustang Horse Book
By Will James
Publisher: Bantam Books Sept 1966 ISBN: None given
Smoky knows only one way of life: freedom. Living on the open range, he is free to go where he wants and to do what he wants. And he knows what he has to do to survive. He can beat any enemy, whether it be a rattlesnake or a hungry wolf. He is as much a part of the Wild West as it is of him, and Smoky can't imagine anything else. But then he comes across a new enemy, one that walks on two legs and makes funny sounds. Smoky can't beat this enemy the way he has all the others. But does he really want to? Or could giving up some of his freedom mean getting something in return that's even more valuable? The experiences of a mouse-colored horse from his birth in the wild, through his capture by humans and his work in the rodeo and on the range, to his eventual old age. Winner of the Newbery Award. Reseller name stamped inside back cover, owners name written in yellow marker on title page, & front cover crease.

The Phantom Roan Vintage Horse Book
By Stephen Holt
Publisher: Scholastic Dec 1968 ISBN: None given
Great old-fashioned Western-style coming of age novel. A young cowboy sets off to fulfill his dream of becoming a vet. Hitchhiking across Canada, he rescues a mangy, injured, outlaw roan with a nasty attitude. Against the advice of his new employer, he nurses the horse back to health, and befriends him. A side story covers the issue of mange management and the government-required dousing that many ranchers attempted to avoid. The main action kicks in when the outlaw roan's former owner, a rodeo livestock promoter, reclaims the horse with plans to return him to his former career as a vicious outlaw bucking horse. Great vintage book but in poor shape, torn corners on front cover separated from book.

Horses For The General Vintage Horse Book
By Erick Berry
Publisher: Macmillan Acorn Books 1963 ISBN: None given
Sixteen year old Lem just wasn't tall enough to be a recruit in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. But he and his faithful dog Rabbit had walked a long way to help General Washington, and it wouldn't rightly do to turn back now! So he simply went along antyway, driving the oats wagon till he could find a way to be a real soldier. He proves his bravery in a single handed rescue of the Army's horses from Pot-Belly and his thieves, his cleverness in hauling the wagon across the Hudson River on a haystack, and his generosity in caring for a little girl's pet horse who was sold to the Army. In the rousing climax to this action packed story, Lem once again comes to the aid of the troops, and finds a heroic way to join Washington's army at last.
