Equitation The Truth Horse Book

By Martin Diggle & Maggie Raynor
Publisher: J.A. Allen & Co. Ltd, 1993, ISBN: 0-85131-583-6
There are lots of serious books about horses, some of which have been written by Martin Diggle and illustrated by Maggie Raynor. In this book, both writer and illustrator have set out to uncover the flip side of equitation; a world inhabited by millions of inexpert and impecunious no-hopers who never-the-less probably manage to get more laughs out of their ill-chosen sport than the most successful household names. This book tells the equestrian story the way it really is and will appeal to anyone who has discovered that a sense of the ridiculous is one of the fundamental prerequisites for riding.

The Equestrian Library Horse Breeding New Edition Book By Peter Rossdale, OBE, PhD, FRCVS

The Equestrian Library Horse Breeding New Edition Horse Book

By Peter Rossdale, OBE, PhD, FRCVS
Publisher: David & Charles, 2003, ISBN: 0-7153 1655-9
Revised and updated in response to popular demand, this book has become acknowledged as a standard reference source in the equestrian world. Peter Rossdale, an eminent practicing veterinary surgeon, is an authority on horse breeding and its associated problems, which makes this an essential read for the mare owner. Horse Breeding provides expert advice and practical information on breeding for all mare owners. Author Peter Rossdale explains in simple language the biological functions upon which horse reproduction is based, giving enough background to enable those working in stables and stud farms to cope with any problems that may arise. He never overwhelms readers with excessive detail and avoids being doctrinaire, arguing that there are many ways to the same end and that it is the duty of the vet to explain a breeder's options. Rossdale's purpose throughout is to clarify and be a source of reference, advocating that those working in and on stables and farms should be in a position to make decisions based on background knowledge as well as experience--knowledge that breeders will find inside this book. Minor wear to cover edges from store handling.

Schooling Young Horses Horse Book By Werner Storl

Schooling Young Horses Horse Training Book

By Werner Storl
Publisher: Breakthrough Publications, Inc., 1991, ISBN: 0-914327-36-4
Schooling Young Horses is a good book for the rider or instructor interested in classical dressage. The author, Werner Storl is a founding member of the German Board of Quadrille Riding and a member of the Special Committee for Quadrille Riding of the German Equestrian Federation. The book begins with a short chapter on how to judge whether you are ready for your own horse and how to find and buy the correct young horse. It is obvious that the author has full knowledge of the foundations of the German methods of dressage. The author offers the rider a combination of traditional advice and years of personal experience. By using basic traditional and classical gymnastic exercises, primarily with the goal of preserving and cultivating the horses natural movement, the author conveys his message to the reader. He explains the prerequisites and skills the rider or trainer of young horses should bring to the task. His lessons under saddle are based on decades of experience and has been developed over years by famous riders and trainers. A basic training plan is outlined by Storl, including lungeing, and helping the horse to find its balance with a rider aboard at the walk and the trot. Teaching the horse to go forward willing and with impulsion is then described. The training plan advances to lateral work and flexion. Storl then moves the reader to the next stage of training such as the canter and teaching the young horse to negotiate cavalettis. Collection work is brought about as the last stage of training and the author closes by discussing common issues that one may experience while training the young horse. Storl methods translate into training techniques that casts a solid foundation for any young horse to advance to further training.
